Description

In 1952, ECL took delivery of their largest 4-8-0 yet. Highly impressed by the Chapelon 240P and L. D. Porta's "Argentina" 4-8-0's, and had Porta design this locomotive for them. Unlike Argentina, however, Porta had the freedom of designing a completely new locomotive instead of rebuilding an existing one.

It was a 3 cylinder compound, with 1 hp cylinder. It was semi streamlined, and, most importantly, had a Gas Producer Combustion system and double Lempor ejectors.

Carolina was highly successful, easily matching the 4-8-2's and 4-8-4's that replaced it's smaller cousins. It could easily hold a 2,000 tonne train at 70mph on the level, and 50mph on a 2% grade. At one point, it reached 110mph with a 1,000 tonne passenger train.

ECL was highly impressed, and built 3 more. They were constantly updated as Porta learned more about squeezing more power more economically. The last modification was in the late 1980's.

At starting, the driver can admit live steam to LP cylinders at 210psi.
